A miracle? Or it’s just the way the American team is built tough enough to win in a soccer game when all stakes are on the line? The fact that the United States Women’s soccer team beat the heavily favorite Brazil 5-3 on penalty kicks after a tied score of 2-2 to advance to the semifinals of the 2011 Women’s World Cup amazes millions of Americans Sunday.
The Americans did stay in the game when it seemed that they were overpowered, outplayed, and even a call from a ref almost caused them to have an early exit. . Hope was still in the heart of the women’s team. The possibility of taking an upset was set in their eyes.
With the play of Abby Wambach tying the game in a creative leap in the 122nd minute of the game. She make it possible for the US team to be in a position for penalty kicks. Furthermore, goalkeeper Hope Solo made a fantastic play denying the Brazilians to score again in the game. Wambach gave life for the Americans as they went on to capture the game through sterling penalty kicks.
In the penalty kicks, the US soccer team was perfect in their three kicks but Brazilians Christiane and Martha tied them to make the game more suspenseful and dramatic. However, it changes everyting when Daiane’s from Brazil kicked and Solo made a saving shot by batting it away. Solo made the difference as the US team almost ready for celebration. However they had still to make two kicks from Rapinoe and Ali Kriger. Both of their kicks were in that completes the stunning upset in the history of Women’s World Cup.
The Brazilian soccer team was so much disappointed as Chritiane was tearful in the interview while Marta was just stunned for what had happened. Brazil took the lead 1-0 early in the game but they were just confident enough to play defensive in the next 60 minutes.
The United States Women’s soccer team will play France in the Women’s World Cup 2011 on Wednesday.
