However, the biggest question for the Patriots was the defense which was second to the last in the NFL. With the offense working, there’s the big doubt about the defense.
Patriots road to Super Bowl 2012
1. Winning 13-3 in regular season – Patriots had been dominant in the regular season as the offense was making the damage against the opponents. To the surprise of many, the Patriots defeated the Jets twice this time around. However, the Patriots record was questionable because it didn’t beat any team that had a winning record. Brady broke the passing record of Dan Marino, though Brees did a better passing year. Brady relied on Wes Welker and his two tightends, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.
2. Shutting Tebowmania – Denver Broncos overwhelming Steelers alarmed the Patriots that they have to prepare better against Tim Tebow uncharasteristic offense. The Patriots dominated the game, 41-10, as they marched into the AFC Championship Game. Brady recorded six touchdowns and a record in the first half with five touchdown passes.
3. Winning awkwardly against the Ravens – Facing the vaunted defense of the Baltimore Ravens, the New England Patriots pulled of a nerve-jangling victory, 23-20. With the missed field goal of Billy Cundiff, the Patriots wrapped up the game to be in the Super Bowl 46. Brady, however, didn’t play well enough to be considered as one of his best games if not worst. The Brady-Belichick combination engraved themselves in the record book as the only player and coach partnership that entered into five Super Bowls.
Giants Road to Super Bowl 2012
1. Against arch-rival Dallas Cowboys – With the commentators saying that the start of the playoff for both teams. Giants played decently to surprise Dallas Cowboys in the season finale. Giants eliminated Cowboys in that tight game.
2. Wild-Card Game – New York Giants showed to the world that they were peaking at the right time when the defense completely shutdown the offense of Atlanta Falcons in a 24-2 victory. Falcons only scored from a safety. This was the moment when many NFL experts believed that the Giants can be in the Super Bowl. By not letting the Matt Ryan offense to operate, Giants deserved to face the Packers.
3. Offense vs Defense – It was an odd for the Giants with 9-7 record facing a 15-1 record in the regular season. However, with the Giants defense making progression as the season gets deep, the Packers were shocked by the loss.
4. NFC Championship game – It took a luck in the NFC title game as they played solid defense until the 49ers made a mistake in the return punt. Giants took the opportunity given as they beat the Niners 20-17 in OT. It was a competitive game with Manning getting in trouble most of the times. However, the Giants are destined to have a second meeting with the New England Patriots.
