St Louis Cardinals captured Game One in a 3-2 squeaker. It is up to the Texas Rangers to bounce back in Game Two to stay alive in this World Series 2011.
In Game One, it was obvious that the pitchers tamed the hitters as Chris Carpenter pitched magnificently to overwhelm the Rangers hitting capability. In Game Two, pitchers will play the most important aspect again. Will the pitchers in both teams will dominate the sluggers?
For St Louis Cardinals, manager Tony La Russa selected Jaime Garcia, 13-7 with a 3.56 ERA in the regular season but his record in the post season is 0-2. Garcia may not have the poise enough to sustain his team but in his previous game against the Phillies he lost the game, 3-2, yet he pitched greatly into the seventh inning.
Garcia must have learned from the past when he struggled to maintain the lead in the NLCS. One time he had a lead of 5-2 into the fifth inning but eventually gave up four consecutive hits against the Brewers. However, La Russa still trust Garcia to make the important win in Game 2 of the World Series.
The 25-year-old left-hander will face the hungry batters of the Texas Rangers in this pivotal Game 2. Garcia must have that composure until the seventh inning just for the team to have a chance in going 2-0.
For the Texas Rangers, it is not alarming to be behind in the series if you know that the next starter is Colby Lewis. Manager Ron Washington is very confident that Game 2 will be different because of his powerful pitcher who dominated the postseason in 2010 with 3-0 record.
Lewis has a record of 14-10 with a 4.40 ERA this season. However, he yielded 35 homers which is an American League high. He has the experience to bring back his team to even the World Series.
Cardinals will try to keep the momentum as the Cinderella story continues. Game One sets the mark for the Cardinals to have the opportunity to distance themselves from the Texas Rangers.
In Game One, La Russa made the perfect move when he allowed Allen Craig to pinch-hit for Carpenter in the sixth inning. Craig delivered a single that paved the way for the Cardinals to have the lead, 3-2. Craig’s slicing hit with two outs in the sixth inning fell inches in front of sliding right fielder Nelson Cruz. Game 1 was just that tight throughout a cold, damp evening.
Because of the dominating bullpen of the Cardinals, they held the lead against the powerful line up of the Rangers to win Game One. Cardinals must have to keep up with the Rangers if they want to win Game 2 of the World Series.
The bright spot for the Rangers are Ian Kinsler who went on 2 out of 4 in batting, Adrian Beltre 2-4, Mike Napoli with a hit and two RBI and a run. Napoli can be the determining factor for the Rangers in this series. Furthermore, Nick Cruz must play like the way he played in the ALCS against the Rays.
Lance Berkman, Albert Pujols, and David Freese are ready to make a hard day for Colby. The Cardinals have a chance to have the gap against the Rangers in this World Series.
