Adam Scott climbs back, Tiger Woods falls

By

Here comes Adam Scott, smelling his chance of winning the PGA Championship 2011. Scott, the winner of last weekend’s Bridgestone Invitational, came through a bogey free performance the front nine in the second round as he shot 4-under par, 5-under par for the tournament currently in second place.

Scott allowed the media not to focus of him in the first round when he scored only 1-under par 69 but today the attention of the golfing world will be on him, or may be not but on his caddie Stevie Williams? With his magical touch through the 12th hole, he already birdied four. We all know that once Scott grasps the lead, he is reluctant to give it back. Furthermore, the impact of his caddie might be again in place in the second round of the PGA leaderboard.

Though Adam Scott was expected to be one of the favorites in this PGA Championship, he didn’t show up that much of sharpness in the first round that world’s attention was on Tiger Woods. Silently climbing to the PGA leaderboard, Scott has now the chance to win another title if he will be playing like the way he did a week ago, never letting up the lead.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods failed to make a move in the third round by shooting 1-over par 71 for the day. This means that for the first time in 14 years, Woods will miss the cut in the PGA Championship, where he won five of his 14 majors. Woods still is not the old Tiger Woods who knows how to dominate the field. He will be watching in the third and final round, he might be cheering for his friend and former caddie Williams and he will wish him the luck.

Woods maybe thinking the importance of his former caddie Williams. And that with all his winnings in the PGA Tour, Williams had been a part and played an important role for him. May a confidence booster!

Yesterday’s leader Steve Stricker posted a 2-over par through the eight hole so far. It seems that he lost the touch that he had in the first round. If he couldn’t find the touch he will end up losing his opportunity to win a major. Stricker knows how to manage the game but he should also learn that this is a major tournament that everybody wants. He must do something in the back nine to climb back to the PGA leaderboard.

For the favorite Rory McIlroy, his chances of winning this PGA Championship is gone when he shot for 3-over for the day. He struggled the whole day because of his injured wrist that he suffered in the third hole of the first round. He made a mistake when he whacked the ball sitting on the root of a tree. Surely the swelling continues and he was in pain finishing second round.

When McIlroy won the US Open with a wide margin, many have crowned him the next “big thing” in golf. At his age of 22, he already had a major in his belt. Expectations were high in this PGA Championship but one big mistake caused him the whole tournament.

Scott Verplank finds himself atop the PGA leaderboard with a flawless performance so far, 3-under par for the day and 6-under par for the tournament. Verplank has made himself an opportunity to win this major by playing solidly making three birdies in the front nine. If Verplank continues to play well, he can distance himself from Adam Scott.

One of the players who is making the big move is Jim Furyk. He birdied the first, fifth, seventh, and ninth whole, 4-under through the tenth whole. Furyk may find himself in the PGA leaderboard at the end of the day. He is perfect so far in hitting the fairways to make him the best preparation for birdies.

American Jason Dufner also makes the climb as he is currently at 4-under par. He has four birdies, an eagle, and two bogeys allowing himself to compete against the big names. If Dufner has to win this PGA Championship, he must have the patience and the aggressiveness.

Among the big names, it looks like that Adam Scott has the advantage of winning this PGA Championship unless otherwise there’s a surprise like Scott Verplank. Moreover, Jim Furyk also is a great player to look into. He has the experience and that he can is known to have a magnificent round.

In the PGA Championship 2011, the projected cut currently is at 4+ that eventually make Woods out of the tournament.
