After moments of interruption due to threat of lightnings, Harrison Frazar of the United States went on with a masterful performance as he currently is atop the PGA The Barclays Fedex Cup leaderboard at 7-under par 64 in the first round.
Frazar pulled off a bogeyless round by shooting seven birdies and 11 pars to complete his day. He flawlessly laboured under the sun to tackle the course with such precision on his tee shots and and putts. Frazar drilled in four birdies in the front nine and he also followed through three birdies in the back nine. It may not be a surprise to find himself alone on top of the PGA leaderboard.
Frazar took advantage of the 5th, 12th, and 15th, all par 5 holes as he putted in all birdies. He also shot a lot of par-saving putts just to make his score better and to avoid bogeys. Moreover, being on top of the Barclays leaderboard, pressure will be mounted on his veins in the second round as other golfers will absolutely chase him. If he stays poise and is ready for the challenge, he can win the Barclays Fedex Cup first event of the Fedex Cup playoffs 2011.
As expected Vijay Singh shoot magnificently to come in for the second place as he posted a 6-under par 65 first round. Singh made a big mistake in the par 3 third hole when he ended it up putting for double bogey that instantly marred his day. However, he encouraged himself after that hole and drilled in seven birdies the rest of the holes without any bogey at all. He bounced back with intensity as he avoided miscalculations on his second shots that manifested for birdies. Singh is one of the big names that is expected to play tough in this competition.
Tied for second place is Jonathan Byrd who shot also at 6-under par 64 for the day. His scores was confusing because he had two bogeys, six birdies, and an eagle to give him a strong finish. After bogeying the fourth hole, he came back with a vengeance as he went aggressive on the par 5 fifth hole for him to shoot for an eagle. Byrd changed the complexion of the PGA leaderboard as he prepares himself for tomorrow’s second round.
One of the favorites, Australian Adam Scott managed to play magnificently in the back nine to post a strong finish at 5-under par for the first round. Scott, winner of Bridgestone Invitational, struggled early in the back nine when he scored at even 35 with a birdie, a bogey, and seven pars but he soared higher in the next nine wholes making five birdies, an eagle, and two birdies. Of course if he drives in to win the Barclays after all rounds, much credit will be given again to his caddie Steve Williams.
Charley Hoffman finished a solid round shooting 5 under par 66 to tie in the third place. He went on aggressively over the course as he posted eight birdies, eight pars, a bogey, and a double bogey. Fourteenth hole par 3 seemed the hardest hole of the day as he was one of those who double bogeyed.
Another player with 5-under 66 performance is Ryan Palmer as he toiled hard to make his score low in the first round. He had six birdies, a bogey, and 11 pars to make himself available to make a run and has a shot of the PGA leaderboard.
J.J. Henry, Chad Campbell, Ryan Moore, Bo Van Pelt, Jason Day, Bill Haas, Kevin Chappell, Nick Watney, Tim Herron, and DJ Trahanfinished a strong round tied all for 4-under par 67.
Meanwhile, Stuart Appleby found himself in a dismal performance as he shot at 10-over par 81. His day was filled with many mistakes that he couldn’t get off a great shot until he birdied the 17th hole. He had two birdies, eight pars, six bogeys, and two triple bogeys to complete his unexpected collapse early in the Barclays 2011.
For those who are looking for Tiger Woods, he is excluded in this tournament because of his failure to play well in the PGA Championship. He didn’t make it throught the top 125 players this time. Surely, it was weird that Woods is not the attention of the this tournament.
Furthermore, US Open Champion sensation Rory McIlroy and British Open Champion Darren Clarke are not in this competition. They are surely missed by the golfing world.
Retief Goosen played averagely in the first round by shooting 3-under par 68. He had six birdies, nine pars, and three bogeys to make the round not enough for him to be as close to the PGA leaderboard. He is four strokes shy on top.
Another notable player who shot at 3-under par is Sergio Garcia. Still he looked to be defensive as he always putted for pars. He made five birdies, two bogeys, and 11 pars for the first round. Garcia is not out of contention that he needs to create the atmosphere of attacking with accuracy in the next rounds if he wants to stay strong.
Phil Michelson is struggle through the seventh hole at 1-over par. Michelson is one of the big names that will make news in the Barclays but he is playing without sharpness in his tee shots.
The race still is wide open in the PGA Barclays Leaderboard Fedex Cup playoffs 2011. As other players are still playing, expect for the PGA leaderboard to change at the end of the day.
