PGA Barclays Fedex Cup 2011: Matt Kuchar surges atop the leaderboard
Matt Kuchar seized the PGA leaderboard as he shot for 8-under par as the first round continued earlier today after being suspended because of darkness. Kuchar was only 3-under par in the front nine but he successfully make one of the biggest moves by shooting for six birdies, a bogey, and two pars in the back nine.
Kuchar started early in the second round and currently at 11-under par for the tournament after six holes. Nobody expected him to play like the way he approaches each hole. Surely he managed to make birdies mostly in back nine by attacking on his second swings. Kuchar can distance himself from the field if he can duplicate his performance in the first round.
Harrison Frazar was second place after the first round as only Kuchar overwhelmed him on top of the Barclays leaderboard. With his amazing performance in the first round and the rest that he took after finishing early yesterday, he has all the advantage in the world to make another 7-under par round. Frazar’s tee off time is at 12:22 PM. Will he be able to regain the PGA Fedex Cup leaderboard?
As the second round is on going, there are many players who already made the move to climb near the top of the leaderboard. Kris Blanks who was 4-under par in the first round is creating damage as he is currently 3-under par through the seventh hole. He is at 7-under par for the tournament. Will he keep playing the whole round?
Furthermore, Robert Allenby is 3-under par after six holes totalling 7-under par. He drilled in bogeys in the first, third, and fourth holes to be two strokes behind the Kuchar. We all know that Allenby has the potentials to win the competition and all he has to do is to keep his momentum making more bogeys and avoiding bogeys. If he keeps his mind in the game, expect him to be in the race for the Barclays title and the Fedex Cup.
Justin Rose also makes his move as he is currently at 8-under par, 4-under par after six holes in the second round. Rose has four birdies so far but if he can continue to sustain his momentum, he can be a contender at the end of the day. He has the capacity to make miscalculations on his tee shots but he knows how to stay in the competition.
As of the moment, Dustin Johnson is at 9-under par, 2 strokes behind Kuchar. He has three birdies in the first four holes of the second round. Johnson must be silent in the first round because of so many names fighting for the position but his three holes makes the difference for the spectators to notice him. He needs to keep playing as he targets for birdies and he must avoid bogeys to be a contender.
Kevin Streelman is currently at 4-under par for the day after finishing seven holes in the second round, 6-under for the tournament. Streelman is not quite familiar with the golf fans but he can make significant move in today’s round. He is one of the players that can create the biggest surprise.
The big names are about to take off in the second round, take for example Vijay Singh who is 6-under par in the first round. We all know that he has the capabilities and the experience to win this tournament if he keeps his focus on the game. Singh’s tee time at 12:44 PM ET.
Meanwhile, Adam Scott is the player to look at in today’s round. By shooting at 5-under par in first round, he needs to be near at the top 10 for him to have a shot in winning the Barclays. Of course we all know that he has the most celebrated caddie in the world, Stevie Williams. Scott must go neck-to-neck against the leader and in the final round he can salvage the win.
Phil Mickelson finished 4-under par in the first round and currently he is 1-under par for the second round. Mickelson is hungry for another title but he needs to be consistent round after round. Without a doubt Mickelson is the biggest name in this competition without of course the king of golf Tiger Woods who didn’t qualify to play in the Fedex Cup.
Searching the keys to be on top of the PGA leaderboard, Sergio Garcia shot for 3-under par in the first round and his performance may not be enough for him to compete. Garcia needs to move higher in the standings so that he will give himself a chance to win the Fedex Cup. Garcia still has the necessary talent to win that evaded him for so long. He must concentrate on his tee shots making them in the fairways.
Number 1 player in the world Luke Donald struggled in the first round as he shot for 1-under par. He drilled in three birdies but his two bogeys affected his round. Donald’s chance in capturing this win depends on his second round performance.
Who will be on top of the PGA leaderboard at the end of the day? Will there be another name that will pop up after the first round?
