PGA Australian Open Leaderboard: Tiger Woods falters, Senden on top
After leading in the second round of the Australian Open, Tigers Woods maneuvered in a wrong direction in the third round as drilled in 3-over par 72. Woods had a bad start making his first three holes all bogeys that he couldn’t recover anymore.
With all the expectations of many that Woods have the chances in the world to win another tournament in two years, it seems that it went all away after he didn’t manage to make the necessary move in the next 15 holes.
Woods bogeyed the 4th and 14th holes but he also gave up strokes in holes 11 and 12. He ended up at 3-over par, 6-under for the tournament. Though he is six holes behind the leader, it would be impossible for him to make the big move to be back on top in the four round.
According to many observers, Woods was sharp on his putts and his tee shots in the first two rounds. However, he couldn’t get the lift that he needed in the third round. Woods still have to dig deeper just for him to be back in the competition.
The biggest gainer of the third round of the Australian Open 2011 is John Senden who finished the third round with 9-under par, 12-under par for the tournament. To the surprised of many, Senden drilled in seven birdies and an eagle.
Senden pulled off a magnificent performance by drilling in the fourth, ninth, 10th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 17th holes. He also made the par 4 sixth hole into an eagle. What made Senden strong in his approach was that he never made a bogey at all. Senden is on top of the Australian leaderboard after three rounds.
Following Senden on the leaderboard is Jason Day with 11-under par for the tournament, just one shot behind Senden. Day shot 4-under par for the third round as he drilled in 3-under par in the front nine while he had two birdies in the back nine but he also had a bogey. Day has the experience to pull a victory in the fourth round. He knows how to handle this tournament and he has a just to keep up with Senden tomorrow.
Greg Chalmers shot 5-under par 72 to place himself third place after third round. Chalmers made the move by drilling in five birdies but he had two bogeys also. Chalmers knows that he can still be a factor in the race for the Australian Open title. Chalmers is 10-under par for the tournament to make him two shots behind the leader.
Nick O’Hern had an outstanding third round when he finished 6-under par. He had eight birdies, an eagle, and four birdies, the rest pars. He played aggressively in those birdies but he made mistakes also on some of the holes that didn’t make him higher in the standings. However, if he can play aggressively again in the fourth and final round, then he will have an opportunity to challenge the three players on top of him. O’Hern is 9-under par for hte tournament, three shots behind.
Meanwhile, Nick Watney is the top American in the Australian Open leaderboard. Watney drilled in eight birdies but he also had four bogeys that marred his performance. Watney finished 4-under for the day but he is still 9-under par for the tournament. If he can manage to level up his game tomorrow, then he will absolutely have to struggle against the other players. He must stay focus especially on his second shots.
On the other hand, the favorite Adam Scott didn’t have a great day as he struggled the whole day. Scott had five birdies, four bogeys, and eagle, and a double birdie. He had all kinds of score that he couldn’t make the move to stay on top. Scott is 5-under par for the tournament.
