Outback Bowl 2012: A safety to put Georgia on top over Michigan State

A weird start in the Outback Bowl as the two teams collide with the defensive schemes that they have. Georgia Bulldogs posted the first score through a safety in the first quarter of the Outback ball against Michigan State.

Just once. Not twice. Destined to be here? It is a journey that sometimes put doubt than faith for the Michigan State Spartans as they face Georgia Bulldogs in the Outback Bowl 2012 at the Raymond James Stadium, 1:00 PM ET. Not only the Spartans have the feelings about “once” but also the Bulldogs.

Michigan State, the loser of the Big Ten Championship game against Wisconsin will have a date with Georgia, the loser of the SEC championship game against LSU. Not to mention that the Spartans were defeated by the Badgers in a close game. It was a game filled with drama that ended up a loss for the Spartans. Yes, they are supposed to be in the Rose Bowl.

The realignment of the Big 10 Conference changed the destiny of Michigan State as the conference was sliced to two. That there should be a game for both the top teams in the conference. However, that is the past story of why the Spartans will settle for the Outback Bowl instead. Truly, Michigan State is one of the teams in the college football that has the offensive and defensive firepower.

Michigan State will have the chance to show to the world that Big Ten can beat a SEC team. Yet another discussion as to why the SEC dominated the BCS National championship in the last five years. Quarterback Kirk Cousins can make the difference for the Michigan State offense. Cousins became the winningest quarterback in the school’s history. He also accumulated 3,016 yards in passing, 24 touchdowns, only seven interceptions as he leads this team into a 10-3 record.

Cousins can derail the defense of the Bulldogs throw his ability to read defenses. Not only that he has his targets like BJ Cunningham who caught 72 times for 1,240 yards this season. Adding to the offense of the Michigan State is Martin who caught 62 times for 742 yards. Surely these two receivers can make Cousins to throw easier.

The Georgia Bulldogs have a 10 game winning streak after losing the first two games. However, the Bulldogs were overpowered by the LSU Tigers in the SEC championship game 42-10. After leading 10-0, the Bulldogs couldn’t understand how in the world LSU scored 42 points.

Georgia started the season in disarray prompting talks about coach Richt end of the road in coaching. However, the team regrouped and eventually they found themselves in a game for the SEC title. Now that Georgia is in the Outback Bowl, it is the time to finish it strong against the defensive oriented Michigan State.

Absolutely, quarterback Aaron Murray will not be facing a tough defense like the Tigers but the Spartans are fifth in the nation in allowing 272 yards per game. Murray completed 16 of 40 passes for 163 yards, with two interceptions in that championship game. He cannot allow that to happen if his team will win this game.

The Bulldogs have also the mounted defense that can beat Michigan State’s offense. Expect this Outback Bowl to be more on the defensive game as the two teams are built to win in defense.
