Who could have thought that the leaderboard in the PGA Championship goes this way, juggling for the top position. The second round of the PGA Championship was busy changing names on top of the leaderboard until it finally ends. To the surprise of many, Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley tied first atop the PGA leaderboard.
Dufner finally came through with a performance of his own with five birdies, an eagle, and two bogeys to have the score of 5-under par 65 for the round. Though he made two bogeys, still his eagle nullified those mistakes. While watching the rest of the field tumbled, he found himself on top of the PGA Championship leaderboard.
On the other hand, Bradley had a flawless round shooting three birdies in the front nine and three birdies in the front nine with no bogeys at all. He putted perfectly to make him tied in the first place and he will have a chance to win his first major if he continues to play with perfect calculations.
We reported earlier about Adam Scott who was 4-under par at one point until he double bogeyed the 18th hole to move him to tie for 11th place. Scott is not out of contention yet with just three strokes behind the leader. He will have a chance to cut the lead again tomorrow and look to win the PGA Championship on Sunday.
On the other hand the biggest casualties of all is Tiger Woods who failed to make a move in the third round by shooting 1-over par 71 for the day. This means that for the first time in 14 years, Woods will miss the cut in the PGA Championship, where he won five of his 14 majors. Woods still is not the old Tiger Woods who knows how to dominate the field. He will be watching in the third and final round, he might be cheering for his friend and former caddie Williams and he will wish him the luck.
Earlier in the day D.A Points cruised to the PGA leaderboard by making 5 birdies and two bogeys, 3-under for the day, 4-under for the tournament and tied at third with just a stroke behind the leaders. Points also waited for the rest of the field to finish the round and he stood still at third place.
Rory McIlroy struggled through pain and his chances of winning this PGA Championship is gone when he shot for 3-over for the day. A mistake in the first round maybe all the reason of his fall in the PGA Championship. He played with bandage on his right wrist and struggled the whole day feeling the pain of the injured wrist. Though he was expected to dominate this PGA Championship, his mistake of whacking the ball that sits on the root of a tree paved the way for him to lose the whole thing.
scott Verplank went on atop the PGA leaderboard at one point when he birdied the fifth, sixth, and eight holes but eventually faded when he bogeyed the ninth, 14th and 16th holes. Verplank ended by shooting 1-under par, 4-under for the tournament.
It is surprising that Jim Furyk. He birdied the first, fifth, seventh, and ninth whole, and 17th, 5-under par for the day. Furyk may find himself in the PGA leaderboard at the end of the day. He is perfect so far in hitting the fairways to make him the best preparation for birdies. The 2003 US Open champion has a chance to win another major after eight years. If he will play a bogey free round tomorrow, he might be in the last group of in the final round.
Yesterdays leader Steve Stricker couldn’t follow through his flawless performance as he struggled with two birdies and six bogeys, 4-over par for the second round, 3-under for the tournament. His sharpness in hitting the fairways didn’t materialize in today’s round. He was feeling the pressure as he teed up late in the the second round. However, despite his dismal performance he is still in contention with just two shots behind the leaders.
Australian John Senden is currently tied at third place at 4-under par. He shot for 2-under par for the second round to make him a chance to play better in the next rounds.
As for the notables who missed the cut, Jason Day, Angel Cabrera, Stewart Cink, Ryo Ishikawa, and Retief Goosen. Phil Michelson currently 1-over par and he will have an opportunity to climb to the PGA leaderboard tomorrow. He was having a great day by making 2-under par until the 18th hole creates problem to him, making it a double bogey.
It is anybody’s game, the race is wide for for the title in the PGA Championship. Who will make a surprise in the third round?
