A different story. The San Antonio Spurs vs Memphis Grizzlies basketball game provides the viewers the best of the Western Conference. The Spurs will not have to deal the Oklahoma City Thunder this time around, but the Memphis Grizzlies. Another chance for the Spurs to be in the NBA Finals before the Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili cannot compete anymore in a high level.
NBA Playoffs Western Conference Finals Showdown between the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies Game One unfolds Sunday at the AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas. For the Spurs, this is all about mixing the old players against the young ones who complemented in their success. Of course the presence of Parker, Duncan, and Ginobili are given to the roster of the Spurs but the addendum of role players and future stars will not be neglected at all.
The emergence of 21-year-old Kawhi Leonard as one of the legitimate scorers enhances the possibility of the Spurs to compete against any team in the NBA. Leonard provides youth and energy to the aging Spurs through his ability to drill in shots as well as his defense. Though Leonard’s participation in Game One is questionable because of his knee that he incurred against the Warriors, it is still a bit of concern for the Spurs. How healthy is Leonard to play over the defense of the Grizzlies?
Tiago Splitter will be a key component for the Spurs to overpower the Grizzlies in Game One. By suffering an ankle injury in the series against the Warriors, Splitter was able to shake himself to be effective though he was not in his usual self. Splitter will be part of the twin tower of the Spurs to topple Marc Gasol. It is important for him to help Duncan in rebounding.
Certainly, the presence of Duncan will be critical in facing Gasol and the big men of Grizzlies. Duncan has to record double-double to make sure the he supplies the necessary contributions to beat the visiting Memphis. Duncan’s low post game will be tested against the tight defense of the Grizzlies. If Duncan’s scoring will be on his 20′s, then the Spurs will be difficult to beat.
On the other hand, the Memphis Grizzlies deserve to be here. After overpowering the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round, the Clippers also trounced the Thunder in a lopsided results. Thus, the Memphis has the power and the means to be the thorn of the Spurs in getting back to the NBA Finals.
Who are the faces of the Grizzlies? Never forget the dominance of Zach Randolf as he delivered the necessary plays against the Thunder. The powerforward had 28 points and 12 rebounds to derail the ability of the Thunder to defend in the clinching game. He must punish Duncan so that they will have the luxury of winning it in the fourth quarter.
The inside game of Marc Gasol will dictate on how the Grizzlies end up victorious. His mandate is to stop Duncan or Splitter and at the same time to be at the right place at the right time. Gasol’s help defense will be watched and his shotblocking ability will be observed.
Tayshaun Prince is the hinge of the defense of the Grizzlies. He will have the job to contain Ginobili and probably Leonard. Luckily, Prince is back to where he wanted – in the playoffs. Can he contain Ginobili?
A must see matchup will be at the pointguard positions in which Mike Conley will have to maintain his composure in attempting to negate the game of Parker. Conley will have to attack the basket in the face of Parker to show to the world that he can play against the Spurs defense.
