Giants vs Saints: Tom Coughlin’s football team is in trouble again
The New York Giants vs New Orleans Saints Monday Night Football game will be important for both teams as playoff is near. New York
will avoid a three-game losing streak while the Saints will try to distance themselves from the Atlanta Falcons.
New York (6-4) last week’s encounter against the Philadelphia Eagles brought nothing from offensive perspective losing it in a 17-10 score. The Giants are in need of this game to keep up with the Cowboys in the NFC East. Few weeks ago, Giants have a two game advantage in that division but their previous two losses against the Niners and Eagles allowed Dallas to have the lead in the NFC East.
It was surprising for the Giants offense to rushed for only 29 yards and 278 yards total offense against the Eagles. Coach Tom Coughlin understands that the Giants are in a stretch where in they can’t afford to lose another game. He can’t afford to let his team settle for another collapse that hunted this team in the previous years. Yes, the Giants can play better than their performance last Sunday and they have to show some offense over the New Orleans Saints.
Quarterback Eli Manning must step up and play a dominant game to match the offense of the Saints. In the previous game, he completed 18 of 35 passes for 264 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Manning has been pressured by the defense that the couldn’t get the ball to his receivers when needed.
Victor Cruz caught six passes for 128 yards as he became the favorite target of Manning. Hakeem Nicks added three catches for 69 yards for the Giants. Another receiver DJ Ware had 17 yards in two catches.
The New York Giants must find ways to make offense on the ground so that they will not become predictable. Brandon Jacobs must be aggressive in looking for the gaps and spaces so that the offense of the Giants will not be concentrated only on the pass.
Defensively, the Giants have enough players to clamp down on the raging offense of the Saints. Giants had stopped the offense of the Patriots before and they can also do it against the Saints.
This is a must win game for the New York Giants. They couldn’t afford to be far away from the Dallas Cowboys. This is also a test on the durability of the Giants this season. However, they must play with such aggressiveness especially in the second half of the game.
For the New Orleans Saints, one game ahead of the Atlanta Falcons will not suffice their desire to win. Besides, there is no certainty that they will get the division title because Atlanta has been a dominant team lately.
The high-powered offense of the Saints must be in display against the pass rush defense of the Giants. Drew Brees must come up with something different so that he will be able to manage the offense with clarity.
Coming off a bye week, the Saints have enough power on their fresh legs to prepare for this game and to have the focus in delivering a win. In their previous game against the Atlanta Falcons in which they won 26-23, Brees completed 30 of 43 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns. He delivered the necessary passes when the team needed it. Also, Brees had not thrown any interception.
Marques Colston had eight catches for 113 yards to lead the Saints receivers. Furthermore, Jimmy Graham added seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown reception. Robert Meachem caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown reception also.
Brees must continually attack the defense of the Giants by spreading his receivers to create confusion on the New York defense. Of course, Brees flourishes on short passes but he must look deep today to beat the Giants.
Brees is still the leader in the NFL with 3,326 passing yards. He is in a tight race with Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady in that category. His record against the Giants is certainly favored on his side as he is 3-0, with seven touchdowns.
The problem for the Saints arises on how they will be able to stop the Giants offense. Still the passing defense of the Saints cannot be relied upon when needed. If they can stop the Giants below 300 yards total offense, then they will have a chance.
