BCS Standings: Boise State Broncos missed field goal costs millions out in BCS rankings

As the regular season ends in the NCAA college football, there are two teams left with undefeated records namely the No 1 LSU Tigers and No 6 Houston. Of course those once-beaten teams can look at what happened in that game that supposed to make them in the conversation for the BCS national title game.

Oklahoma State’s defeat to the Iowa State in double overtime was one of them. Certainly, the Cowboys should have stayed undefeated if they just won that game but they blew it greatly. Oklahoma State still is in consideration to have an outside shot in overthrowing Alabama but still the damage was done.

Without a doubt, Stanford’s defeat in the hands of the Oregon was also hurtful for the team because they are also out of the conversation for the National game against LSU. What a game it was that Stanford couldn’t stop the offensive attacks of the Ducks. Should they won, they will be playing in the Pac 12 conference game against UCLA and surely they would win.

Virginia Tech also is a team that failed to make the best of it. The Hokies couldn’t score in that game against Clemson in the fifth week of their schedule. They were overpowered 23-3. What if Virginia Tech displayed their greatness in that game. Besides, they played at home against Clemson but couldn’t make the necessary offensive attacks.

Let’s continue…Oregon Ducks had also a shot at it but failed to make the win against USC. They couldn’t complete a comeback against USC and the Ducks was beaten in a slim margin 38-35. Alejandro Maldondado missed a 37 yard fiel goal that should have been the game tying score. If Oregon won that game, they should be in a conversation to have a rematch against the Tigers. An Alabama or Oregon vs LSU will be the tough call for the selection of the BCS national teams.

Oklahoma Sooners. Don’t forget the Sooners losing two close games. The recent collapse against Baylor in a 45-38 score paved the way for other teams to climb. Yes, Oklahoma Sooners was a legitimate contender for the BCS title game but they failed to deliver in what should have been a magical season.

The biggest of all that etched in the minds of the football fanatics was that game of Boise State Broncos vs TCU. Then the fifth ranked Broncos had the opportunity to stay undefeated when freshman kicker Dan Goodale missed a 39-yard field goal that went right as time expired. The costly field goal that might assured the Broncos a BCS game invitation and even a debate on their chance to the BCS National title game.

Broncos missed field goal can cost them a BCS game for Houston might be selected instead of them. As of the moment, even though the Broncos are in the seventh spot in the BCS Standings, still it would be hard for them to be considered to play in a BCS game.

However, an small shot is still available for them provided that the rest of the schedule of other teams will fall on their advantage. Let’s look at some games that will affect the chance of the Broncos by eliminating some of the teams.

1. A Georgia Bulldogs defeat – If LSU wins the SEC conference game against Georgia, then there will only be two teams from the SEC to fill up the 10 BCS spots. This means Alabama and LSU are the only teams. However, if Georgia wins, then we have three SEC teams occupying the 10 spots.

2. An Oregon win – If Oregon wins, then there’s no more possibility for the UCLA to get a BCS game paving the way for Oregon to get a spot and Stanford from the Pac 12.
3. Virginia Tech losing to Clemson will surely complicate the matters. Of course Clemson will get a slot and Virginia Tech will be a team that can overshadow the Broncos.

4. Houston must win. Absolutely, TCU will overwhelm Broncos if they will be climbing highers. Another competitor for a slot. How this will happen? If Houston loses and one of two of the Big 10 teams will be dropped out. This means that TCU will be the non-BCS team to be invited not Broncos.

5. Alabama to be out in the top two teams. If Oklahoma State takes No 2 spot in the BCS rankings making the Crimson Tide get one of the BCS game separate from the National title game.

If that field goal was in the bank, then the Broncos will surely be in a BCS game. It was the most expensive field goal for the Broncos as they will have to wait for the five things above to happen

Virginia Tech loses to Clemson in the ACC championship game. This would put the Hokies in the at-large pool and make more competition for the Broncos.
