BCS Standings 2011: LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State lead the way in current projections

Controversies over? LSU vs Alabama in the BCS national title game? With the regular season of the college football over, but there are games left to settle for the winner of each conferences, it looks like that the picture of the BCS national title game is finally over.

LSU Tigers showed that they are the best team by overpowering Arkansas Razorbacks, 41-17. Of course there was a tension when the Hogs started the game with a 14-0 lead but it was all the effort of the Tigers to completely come back and to grab the win. LSU (12-0) defeated the No 2 Alabama, and the No 3, Arkansas to be on top of the SEC East but not only that, the Tigers are on top of everybody.

However, the controversy still arises because there are teams with only on loss each. How can the BCS system settles this matter? Stanford is a legitimate contender with the record of 11-1. Their only defeat was on the hands of the top 10 Oregon Ducks. It can be disputed the Cardinal’s only loss was from a the Ducks which at that time had a shot also of the BCS title game. But the fact of the matter for the Cardinal is that they had that chance to have a perfect record but they failed to deliver. The case is settled, Alabama’s loss was from the No 1 team. Take away the Cardinal from the picture.

Oklahoma State Cowboys will have a game against the Oklahoma Sooners. If the Cowboys win, then what? Whatever happens to this game there is nothing to alter the position of the Crimson Tide. Oklahoma State had that chance to sweep the season but they failed against an unranked team Iowa State. Before that debacle, they are supposed to be at No 1 in the BCS Rankings if they are supposed to win all their games even surpassing LSU because of their brutal schedule. Let’s take out the Cowboys in the conversation.

Virginia Tech Hokies are legitimate to be in the top two teams in the BCS Standings 2011? Absolutely not! Virginia Tech did their part in beating Virginia in a 38-0 last Saturday but it wasn’t enough to kick out Alabama or LSU. The Hokies will be playing one of the BCS games but not the game on January 9, 2012. Virginia Tech might be the best team with that one loss but still that one game made the difference for them not to be in the biggest game.

How about the undefeated Houston? Houston will be in one of the BCS games but the fact of the matter is that they don’t have the strength of the schedule to be considered in the conversation for the National title game. They will replace TCU or Boise State this time as the non-BCS conference team to be in one of the prestigious games.

What happened to the Arkansas Razorbacks? The Razorbacks may probably the best team with the teams of two losses. Surely that two losses from the top two teams in the FBS will ultimately bring them there. Still we don’t know if they will be in the BCS games. Assuming that Georgia Bulldogs defeated LSU in the SEC conference title game, then LSU-Alabama in the National title game but the Bulldogs will take one of the BCS games slots. However, if LSU beat Georgia, then Arkansas will be taken into consideration.

Oregon Ducks captured the Pac 12 North and will have a chance to be in a BCS game if they beat UCLA in the conference game next week. Oregon’s defeat from the Trojans hurt their chance in the conversation for the national title. What if they won that game, then we have a contoversy as what team will be in the second place?

Boise State? Not this time. The Broncos had that chance to stay undefeated and probably in that controversy again in the BCS selection but the dream went all away in that missed field goal. Yes, the Broncos were in a field goal away for the BCS title game. Better luck next time.
