2012 Australian Open: Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic Men’s Singles Finals & Results

Power vs Power. Speed vs Speed. Who will win? What a match in the Australian Open as the No 1 and No 2 seeds will have a gigantic collision in the Men’s Singles Championship. Serbian Novak Djokovic faces Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the biggest sport spectacle of the day as the finale of the Aussie Open 2012.

The two tennis players are already familiar to each other as they play for the third consecutive grand slams finals. Dating back in the Wimbledon and US Open 2011, Djokovic owned Nadal as far as the winner of those grand slams. Djokovic captured has been the world no 1 the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) since 4 July 2011 dethroning Nadal in that post. The switch from Federer to Nadal to Djokovic as the No 1 player has been imminent as Djokovic won three grand slams last year excluding the French Open which Nadal won.

Djokovic played in a tight and extended night on Friday in the semifinals against Andrew Murray. Having the lead 5-2 in the fifth set, he allowed Murray to maneuvered and tied the match at 5-5. However, he sustained his service and he broke Murray’s opportunity to tie it as the match ended in the final set at 7-5. The question for tonight’s match will be how strong those legs are to competed the the fresher Nadal. Before winning the fifth set, he even trailed 2-1 yet he pursued his dream with such precision and power. It is up to Djokovic to make the move in this Australian Open Men’s Singles Finals over Nadal.

Nadal reached the finals by beating the greatest player in the history of tennis Roger Federer in four sets. Nadal destroyed Federer and sent a message that this era will be already for him in the head-to-head match. With aggressive approach on his services and on his forehand volleys, Nadal attacked the net as Federer couldn’t match the strength and the power being displayed. Nadal has a day more rest that can be his edge when he plays in the Australian Open 2012 finals. He already made sure that he is better than the Swiss champion by dominating him. This is an opportunity for Nadal to make up the losses in the previous two grand slams.

Who will win the match? In considering the Djokovic as a valid and better all around player, it really depends on how he will tackle the surprise elements of the match. Surely, Nadal will have the game plan that will confuse his opponent that might be the key for winning the Open. Djokovic meanwhile, can play with such attacks on the forehand of Nadal. Furthermore, Djokovic can use his power serves that will eventually produce aces especially in the critical stage of the match.

Nadal has to get some of the tricks of Murray in approaching the match. He has to keep his poise and play longer in each points. A longer points collision will be the advantage of Nadal as Djokovic was not able to make those points for him as it went in a stretched amount of time. If Nadal will observe longevity, he will have a chance to win as Djokovic couldn’t get that farther.

Nadal must intelligently use pressure on the baseline to make the shots that Djokovic couldn’t reach. The Spaniard must make sure that he himself will not suffer any physical disadvantage while he tries to prolong the affair.
