Grey's Anatomy: Drowning On Dry Land

We told you a couple of days ago that word was the show was planning to kill off a major character, one that nobody thought they would kill off. Yes, I was hoping it was Meredith, her character just bugs me, sort of like George doess, but I didn’t really think they would do it. I sort of figured it might be Izzy since there was rumor of Denny coming back (probably a flashback or something) and her character has been really boring lately anyway. So leaving us with Meredith sinking in the water last week seemed like too much of a setup. however, things have been abuzz this past couple of days with talk of who it would be. Now we find out… or did we?

First, there’s really not much to talk about in this episode other than the apparent death of Meredith Grey. We have George running around looking for a missing kid because like a good little intern he lied to the mother before she went into surgery. No George, that was a stupid thing to do regardless what you thought.

Alex, in between time batting eyes at Addison, is having to figure out how to deal with the angry mob of people searching for loved ones and being the one that has to constantly tell them there is no new information. Novel idea to use the camera to post photos of the patients and even the deceased in the morgue, although in this day of privacy, especially patient privacy I’m not sure that would have happened. Still, it was a good idea on his part.

Then there’s Izzy, whose on the bridge drilling holes in a guys head with a power drill. Now, someone pointed out they did show liquid leaking onto the road last week, and you could hear something that sounded like fluid running somewhere near them so to be honest, I expected that we’d switch to Meredith being resurrected by Derek, just in the nick of time and just as he told her he loved her, maybe even proposed, the cars on the bridge would explode. When I saw Izzy hop out of the back of the ambulance at the hospital, I new then Meredith was “Deaths” new date.

However, before we get to that, I do want to say that if nothing else, this was the perfect revival of Izzy’s character. I loved it and to see her sharp whit resurface on the bridge with the guys friends over the whole freaking out thing was great. Welcome back Izzy, we have missed you.

But enough of everyone else, let’s talk about Meredith. There’s “Dead, dead” then there is “TV Dead” and in Tee Vee land, your never really dead, until your completely dead. (Quote, movie Congo), and even then you might not really be dead. I had a hard time putting together how long she was in the water but it had to be a pretty good while. Of course, it’s winter so the water is obviously very cold but still, how long could one survive underwater? As much as this excites me, and yes, I will throw my own personal party if she is over, I’m really not buying they’d do this. The previews suggested next week is the “devastating conclusion” to the three part mini-series, so I’m figuring the devastating part will, for me, be that she wakes up none the worse for wear. And that will be the thing too, the entire episode will be devoted to a timeframe of a matter of minutes in real life but spaced out over the hour as Denny and the bomb squad dude try to convince her why she shouldn’t be dead. In the end, she’ll wake up and Derek will no doubt ask her to marry him, and she’ll be fine despite being quite “TV dead”. Right now the show has fans on pins and needles for a week wondering “what if”, it’s good for ratings because it did make for quite an intense episode. If Denny and bomb squad dude are truly there to convince her why she shouldn’t be “really dead” then it will have fans screaming at her through the TV.

Then there’s the other possibility. Maybe she is completely dead. Some argue that because the show is named after her, it couldn’t go on. We’ll, this is ABC and ABC killed off a main Desperate Housewives character (sort of) in the very first show, yet that character continues to have a main role in every episode (sort of). Meredith does the exact same thing already on Grey’s by doing the little lead-ins and lead-outs every week. There’s no reason this couldn’t continue. Maybe Ellen Pompeo is looking to scale back her involvement in favor of other things and this would allow her to continue to be a part of it, not to mention the associated royalties.

Anyway, it’s definitely dramatic and worthy of the “clinchers” they’ve become rather famous for. In fact, I sort of really like this. I’m a huge ER fan and Grey’s, offers a different view of a similar setting and this episode was right up there with some of ER’s most memorable “character killings”. Tune in next week when we find out just how dead Meredith Grey really is.
