The second season of Dr. Who has come to a close and we find ourselves in the a bit of a dilemma. As the final episode opens Rose is narrating how this is the time she died and we find our companions in the midst of a potential standoff between Daleks and Cybermen, both of whom have learned how to pass through the void between dimensions and invade earth of the present. In the nick of time Mickey and company shows up, having developed devices that would allow them to hop between dimensions. As the Daleks release their brethren from a Time Lord devised prison, the Doctor figures out that closing the rift would suck all those that pass through it back into the void, forever trapping them there. The alternate Pete Tyler talks Jackie into coming with him to the other dimension and the doctor insists that Rose go as well. At the last minute she jumps back into the present to assist the Doctor in closing the rift. A slight malfunction in the device puts Rose in jeopardy as she sacrifices herself to ensure the rift stays opens long enough to suck all the bad guys in, but she too is sucked into the rift. As she is pulled towards the rift opening, Pete Tyler appears to snatch her away to the alternate dimension. As the episode concludes we find a final meeting between Rose and the Doctor as he says goodbye one final time.
Thus for the second time in as many seasons, the show will start it’s new season with the replacement of a major character. I really hate to see Rose go, she was funny, easy on the eyes, and quite charming. Word is , Billie Piper, the actress that plays Rose, is off to pursue other career avenues and will be replaced by Freema Agyeman who played a bit part in the second to final episode this season. This is exciting news, not only is Freema another knockout companion for the Doctor to tool around with, word on the set is she was a natural fit to play the part of the Doctors new companion.
“When I first saw Freema Agyeman she had come in to audition for the part of Adeola in series two,” said executive producer and writer Russell T Davies.
“Watching her during filming confirmed what an exciting new talent she was, so under cover of darkness we called her back in to audition with David [Tennant] for the role of the new companion.
“It was an immediate and sensational combination.”
I was at first put off by the sudden departure of Christopher Eccleston but David Tennant is doing really well in the role and the transition worked really well. I think this change will work really well also, but we will have to wait until Season three starts this summer to get our first look at Freema in her new role. The real question is, have we seen the last of Rose Tyler?
