My Favorite Shows of 2006

December 26th, 2006 · No Comments ·

Doctor WhoIt’s been an up and down year with television. I have the shows I’m loyal to and tend to watch bits and pieces of different ones here and there. There are so many new shows that start every season now that’s it’s impossible to watch them all. So in a year that’s seen some good shows end, “Alias” and other shows I like put on the chopping block, “Stargate SG-1″ I thought I’d take a quick look at some of the more interesting shows I did watch this year.

Battlestar Galactica: I this is on most of the “Best of 2006″ lists I’ve seen. It is a great show, mixing just the right blend of modern day controversial issues with human drama and a healthy dose of spaceships, robots and laser beams to satisfy the sci-fi nut in me. Galactica has made some interesting moves this year, and at times come dangerously close to “boring” but for a season that seen the galactic fleet torn apart and then struggle to put itself back together, it’s been one heck of a ride.

Greys Anatomy: Who doesn’t like this show? I must confess I tried real hard to avoid it. Then one night during season 2, when nothing else was on and I was bored, I decided to sit and watch. What a mistake that was. Now it’s a must see addition to the weekly line up. The up side I guess is it’s quality time spent with the wife..

Desperate Housewives: I was ready to foreclose on Wisteria Lane when this year began. Last season pretty much did me in with boredom, but this year, the housewives have managed to lure me back into watching. It took most of the season but it seems the writers were trying to right the errors made in the previous season and get this show back on course.

24: Probably my favorite of all the shows this year. Along with a lot of people I vacated this series midway through season 2 when they officially went too far “over the top”. I caught season 4 in reruns and was intrigued enough that I figured, what the heck, give it another try with season 5. FOX made one of the greatest moves ever by airing two, two-hour episodes over two nights to start the season. After being lured fours hours into it, I had to know what happened from there and it’s a good thing, this was definitely the best season yet.

Dr. Who: Will undoubtedly not be gracing the “Best of 2006″ lists, but I really enjoy this cheesy show. I was a bit disappointed to see Christopher Eccleston departure after only one season, but I’ve grown accustomed to David Tennant,a nd a Rose by any other name.. well. I can think of all kinds of descriptive words that fit this show, none of which are very becoming, but it still provides ample entertainment for an otherwise boring Friday night.

Deadliest Catch: Here’s another that won’t be on the Who’s Who list of 2006 chows but if you like real life drama, then this show is for you. Documenting the rugged and dangerous life at sea of the Alaskan King Crab fisherman, this documentary it as riveting as it is interesting. This is what Reality TV should be.

Everest: Beyond the Limit: If you missed this show that recently concluded on Discovery, I highly recommend you catch one of the many reairing. The series documents the two month assent of the worlds tallest mountain and trials and tribulations of the 11 climbers who dream to stand on top of the world. The 24 sherpas and 3 professional mountain guides that want to help them achieve those dreams, and a 17 member production team that captures what has become the biggest commercialized climbing venue in the world.
